It started in 2001 with a Rotary Foundation Discovery Grant and help from Iowa State University officials.   In February, 2002, the Discovery Grant team went to Xicotepec to meet Rotarians there and learn more about their projects and the needs in the Xicotepec, Mexico area.   This team included several Rotarians from District 6000.  The report submitted by this team served as the foundation for choosing projects undertaken by teams made up of Xicotepec Rotarians along with visiting youth and District 6000 Rotarians.  In March, 2003, 49 members of the first project team spent a week in Xicotepec and helped construct new classrooms at the Escuela Primaria Club Rotario Los Tezontles.  More that 650 project team members have made up the project teams that have come to Xicotepec in March in every year since.

The Rotary Club of Ankeny's first participation was in 2006 when we sponsored two adults and 5 students to join other District 6000 youth and Rotarians in the March trip to Xicotepec. The club continued to sponsor youth and adults each year through 2010 however no one from Ankeny has participated in this humanitarian trip during the past four years.  The next trip will be from March 14 through the March 22, 2015.  The projected cost of the 2015 trip is about $1,750 including air fare.  Applications, along with a $200 deposit, must be received by November 21, 2014.    If you are interested in participating in this life-changing experience, please contact a board member.
